   genuine stack of pupusas
Wednesday, December 19 2007
At 10pm Gretchen and I met up with the Bard Prison Initiative crew at La Pupuseria on Broadway in Kingston. La Pupuseria is one of my favorite restaurants and evidently it's a favorite of the hip kids of Bard as well. Most of the folks there tonight were Bard students who provide tutoring to the student inmates in the program. They were all incredibly young-looking and it turned out that one of them had been born as late as 1987. At twice his age, I was the oldest person there. I felt simpatico with them though because they were all drinking the beer I always drink, Negra Modelo, as opposed to the Corona that must gringos prefer. One of the Bard guys was heading to Ecuador in a few weeks, and having been there I could impart highlights of my experience.
I was, however, the only one there who ordered a genuine stack of pupusas for dinner. I'd had a little pasta earlier and so only ordered cuatro of the questo y frijole kind, but I could have easily eaten my usual (and probably trademarkable) cinco. Max (the guy who runs BPI) was delighted by how quickly I devoured them. He is the only guy I've ever met who can eat as fast as I can.
Conversation was mostly BPI shop talk, with a special emphasis on how paranoid prison officials are about cell phones. My part in all of this is that I am supposed to be setting up computer labs at one of the prisons, but (as with anything when one depends on others), I've been stymied by delays.
