in a diner with my smartphone
Monday, November 26 2018
I had a reasonably productive day at work today, at least as measured by how the time seemed to pass. On days when I'm trying to find things to do, the afternoons crawl by. But on days like today, when I'm successfully using my laptop as two different development servers to serve pages and services to an iPad or when I'm encountering and then overcoming difficulties in the remote installation of a printer, it's like there aren't enough hours in the workday.
I'd forgotten to bring leftover pasta for lunch today and a burrito that had been in the office refrigerator for over a week had gone bad, so I was forced to go out for lunch on the day when most of the area restaurants are closed. So I drove to the Historic Village Diner, that old train-car diner just north of the main intersection of Red Hook. It was high noon and the place was crowded, mostly with older retirees. I sat in a booth, just me and my smartphone, and order the veggie burger deluxe, which comes with a metal basket of fries, lettuce, tomato, and a big unnecessarily-sweet pickle. I also ordered a cup of coffee, which proved surprisingly good.
I drove home in rain so heavy that cars headed home from jobs didn't seem to want to go about 50 miles per hour. As Gretchen whipped up a pasta with some sort of white sauce, I made a meme image for one of my Facebook avatars. It depicted Jesus Christ being nailed to the cross with the words (typeset in Comic Sans) reading "Crossfit: You're doing it wrong."
