mystery flies Monday, October 25 2021
location: rural Hurley Township, Ulster County, NY
For much of the day it was actually warmer outside the house than it was inside. There was also a proliferation of flies (they looked to be a little bigger than conventional houseflies) coming from somewhere in the house and trying to escape. I kept opening the windows in the dining room to let them out. Perhaps somewhere among the dust motes beneath a piece of furniture there was a dead chipmunk whose maggots had just come out of pupation. It's not a pleasant thought, but there was no reason to have any malice towards flies wanting to go out into a world that will soon be frozen solid.
There was a lot of food in our refrigerator because Gretchen had had to collect all Powerful's possessions prior to his heart transplant. (Perhaps this was in case he died in surgery.) Additionally, Gretchen bought a bunch of groceries after work using his SNAP card, which, as I've mentioned before, has a use-it-or-lose-it policy. There was so much food on hand that I didn't bother making dinner (as I normally would on a Monday), so when Gretchen came home, she cobbled together food for both of us using various odds and ends. My meal ended up being a Mexican bean-rice-and-peppers concoction served with two wheat tortillas. Gretchen had also made a salad with tahini dressing that was both simple and tasty.
