bluestone mine hiding in plain sight Thursday, September 26 2024
It rained most of the day, though at around 5:00pm when Gretchen went off to a benefit for the Dutchess County SPCA in Poughkeepsie, the rain had ended and I took the dogs for a walk. Initially it seemed like Neville was going to come, but he never even made it to the Farm Road. Down near the south end of the Farm Road, I'd recently (that is, in the past few days) found a tiny bluestone mine between the south end of the wetland east of the road and a parking area for a parcel whose access is via a short end section of the road's east side. The mine is actually somewhat visible from the Farm Road as a telltale hump in the forest, but it had somehow escaped me attention in the nearly 22 years we've lived here. So on this walk, while Charlotte pranced around and hoped the walk would resume, I found a few nice pieces of bluestone and piled them up on the side of the Farm Road for me retrieve later.
Back in my laboratory, I eventually finished the last of my journal entries for the recent trip to Germany, so I celebrated by drinking a bit too much and watching various YouTube clips. I've been enjoying the deadpan humor and obvious intelligence of a YouTuber named Patrick Boyle. His take on Saudi Arabia's deeply-stupid Neom project is as good a place to start as any.
