Charlotte is back to acting out Monday, September 30 2024
location: rural Hurley Township, Ulster County, NY
Over the weekend a new area rug arrived for the living room, replacing the one we'd had for years that now stank of dog piss. It was on the floor there last night when I arrived with the dogs. Having no faith in Charlotte, this morning I ran my bare feet over that carpet looking for wet spots. Sure enough, there was one! I immediately ripped the carpet out and used a lot of soap and water from one of the rain barrels to wash away what I could of the piss. More of the carpet got wet than I would've preferred, so I could just barely lift it to throw it over the Forester so it could drip-dry and be beaten by the sun.
That wasn't the only acting out Charlotte did today (for reasons unknown). At some point I came out of the house and saw her lying at the end of the driveway, partly in the road, seemingly sunning herself. In horror I shouted "get out of the road!" She returned to the road at least two more times subsequently. I went out there and found some torn-apart sandwich trash from Stewarts that might've been an attractive nuisance, but then later when Gretchen drove home from work, she found Charlotte out in the road yet again.
I'd been able to get Charlotte (but not Neville) to come on a walk with me up the Farm Road, where I'd stockpiled some more nice pieces of bluestone to retrieve for later use paving the Mossy Rock Trail.
Meanwhile at work, Gretchen had taken some of that soup she'd made last night. But I'd added a bit too much ghost pepper to it and she found it inedible. She did, however, come home with food from the Garden Café, as they had a red bean & kale soup and those mushroom tacos I like. Earlier in the month, the new season of Jeopardy! had begun, and I'd downloaded some episodes to watch, which we did (after some strugging with a failing remote).
Over the weekend an infection along the thumb-side cuticle of my right ring finger became uncomfortable enough to be a problem, forcing me to apply antibiotic salve and tape. Things haven't improved since doing that, so last night and today I soaked it in very hot salt water (the way infections were dealt with in my family; we generally didn't use newfangled medications like antibiotics). The infection still hasn't gone away, and my attempts to prod pus out of it proved too painful to continue. And soaking in the bathtub this evening hasn't helped either.
