maybe it was a kite Tuesday, October 8 2024
location: rural Hurley Township, Ulster County, NY
[REDACTED]
When Gretchen went off to pilates at 5:00pm, I immediately took the dogs for a walk, and both of them came. We crossed the Farm Road and walked (mostly via existing trails) to the abandoned go cart track, where I looked through the big pile of scrap metal there for interesting pieces. As I was walking home with a long piece of alumninum that I could maybe use to make a sliding track, I kept seeing various interesting birds. One was a pileated woodpecker that landed in a juniper tree out in the field near Georges' barn. The bird was eating something enthusiastically, probably juniper berries. My camera kept fucking up, and as I snuck closer, the woodpecker saw me and flew away. Then I tried to take a picture of what I think was a flicker, but he flew away before I could get a picture. Finally, some large graceful bird of prey with a white head flew over. Its wings were too narrow for it to have been a bald eagle, so maybe it was a kite.
