a slow drive through the Catskills Sunday, December 15 2024
Neville came with us at around noon when I finally got around to walking the dogs. Charlotte wanted to start on the Woodshed Path, so we took that down to the Stick Trail and went a half mile or more down that and then climbed the incredibly steep slope that I normally go down (because I normally go on this route in reverse). Neville is slow, but he's like a little tank when it comes to climbing slopes, and after considering it for a minute or so he climbed it without difficulty.
Later in the day I processed the rest of a fallen white ash on the nearby Stick Trail that I'd started processing back before Halloween. I had it all bucked into pieces by dark, but continued to carry in pieces well after using a lamp to light my way. It ended up being a fair amount of wood, all of which I split and brought directly into the house. I wanted to get this wood inside before any precipitation fell on it. There was snow falling just a little west of us at the time.
Meanwhile Gretchen was slowly making her way across New York State from Rochester. Her prospective tenant had flaked on her, which was a great trait to reveal before signing her on as a tenant, so the trip wasn't as productive as hoped. But Gretchen had a good time with our Rochester friends, had another look at our spectacular new house, and hung out for three hours with one of her former prisoner-students in Ithaca on the drive back home. She then drove slowly from Binghamton (the closest fast chargers to Ithaca) across the Catskills in sketchy weather (a wet snow was falling at times). Charlotte lost her mind when Gretchen finally arrived at around 8:10pm.
