Windows 11 audio torments Thursday, April 10 2025
For some reason in the workplace I continued with that ChatGPT doom loop I mentioned yesterday. Part of the reason was how cheerful ChatGPT was being, reassuring me that I was on the brink of solving my problem even though I'd just entered the 50th time through a failed debugging loop it was orchestrating.
As I did that fruitless work, I listened to or watched old YouTube clips about some of my famous murderers, such as Chandler Halderson and Chris Watts. I've yet to find a perfect solution to my audio needs with the horrible Windows 11 laptop I've been assigned. (It's a Dell XPS built around an Intel i7, and I would never buy such a computer.) Its foundation problem is some hardware problem with its built-in audio jack, which cuts out randomly, sometimes refusing to connect to headphones until after a reboot. To solve that, I added a tiny USB dock that includes its own audio jack. That jack works reliably, though now the underlying Windows 11 operating system is the problem. When I listen to a YouTube video through that jack, occasional spikes of volume will cause the computer to automatically halt the YouTube playback, forcing me to take action to start it running again. As far as I can tell, this is a bug in Windows 11, and it is widely complained about online, though there is no solution for it. (Though turning the volume down to barely audible seems to help.) So recently I bought a very cheap bluetooth headphone, and initially it seemed to work okay. But eventually I realized that it must have an extremely weak radio or terrible antenna, because if I wear it in a way where the part with the bluetooth technology is blocked by my head from a direct line-of-sight to my laptop, it's almost unusable. If I wear it flipped around the other way, it's mostly useable. But it's still subject to frequent irritating stutters. So today I brought in an older bluetooth headset, but my idiotic Windows 11 laptop refused to even charge it (via a USB mini cable) because it "couldn't be recognized." (Later I was successful charging it at home using a dumb phone charger.) At this point I want to fucking nuke Windows 11 from fucking orbit.
The weather was so cold and clammy today that when Gretchen went off to pilates, I took a bath instead of taking the dogs for a walk.
