surprisingly big electrical and beer sections Thursday, May 22 2025
It was a dreary day, with temperatures peaking in the low 50s and a light rain falling most of the time. It was definitely soup weather, and I brought some with me to work. At lunch today the king of the lunchroom court seemed to go out of his way to be nice to me, perhaps because he was worried I might go to management to complain about his racist outburst yesterday. (That is not something I will be doing despite how repellant I found it.) The king then went on to tell us how he'd managed to give up a one-litre-per-day liquor habit about 20 years ago. He'd passed out (as he did every night) and then his wife had a seizure, something his then 12-year-old son had to deal with alone. The next day his son proudly told him he'd handled the whole thing, and the king was so ashamed he gave up liquor entirely and hasn't touched it since. "Did you have DTs?" I asked. He said he hadn't. This was a surprisingly vulnerable story for someone who mostly comes across as a narcissistic hardass.
Meanwhile, I finally got access to a VPN that would allow me to begin diagnosing a client's problems. Despite the access, though, I didn't know where to go to begin my investigation. Being stuck like this isn't much of a problem, though, because there are lots of ways for a person like me to pass the time while sitting at a desk, even if few them are work-related.
On the drive home, I stopped in at the hardware store in Accord to buy more half-inch PVC conduit for finishing out the subterranean cable run I am doing at the cabin. That hardware store has a surprisingly big electrical section (it seems bigger than what you find in a Home Depot), and they had plenty of the pieces I needed. Later in Stone Ridge, I stopped at the Mobil station to get some road beer (since my personal drinking rules permitted drinking on the ride home today). That gas station had an amazingly comprehensive beer cave that even had imperial ports and Belgian tripel ales. I got a six pack of the latter ($22!) and a bag of Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos.
Meanwhile Gretchen had gone into Manhattan for the night to watch plays and hang out with friends, so I had the house to myself. I tried to take the dogs for a walk, but they didn't want to go anywhere in the light rain. So I ended up just going down to the Chamomile Wall and doing more work on its extension west of the Stick Trail.
Later I took a nice hot bath to melt away the chill. I'd taken 150 mg of pseudoephedrine this morning, so it took a fair amount of booze to get me into a mood where I wanted to go to bed.
