even Australian tourists Friday, May 23 2025
During my day in the remote workplace, I managed to ge a WiZ lightbulb to respond to a few basic commands sent via UDP. I would like to add the ability to control such bulbs to my ESP8266 Remote Control system. But, since they do not initiate their own communications, controlling them would not be a simple matter of having them check a website to see what their state should be. Instead I'd have to have a proxy on the local network to send them commands. Such a proxy could check a remote website and it could also automate complex patterns, perhaps picked up from such a website. That proxy could theoretically be one of the ESP8266 Remotes, though there is already so much happening on one of those that it would probably make sense to put that responsibilty on some other type of ESP8266, perhaps one working as a Local Remote.
Since Gretchen had not yet returned from Manhattan, at noon I took the dogs (both came) for their "morning" walk. That is a good time for me because I start my day early, the dogs start their day late, and I am expected to take a lunch break at around that time. (Nobody really checks in on me when I am working remotely, though the culture at the company is to send emails on Fridays to say when we begin and end our work and when we begin and end our mandatory lunch break.)
This evening our friend Fern and both her parents would be arriving from New York City as part of a long visit to the United States from Australia. To prepare for that, I did a very modest amount of cleaning.
Fern and her parents (Pete and Jean) arrived at around 7:00pm, a little before Gretchen. They'd brought three vegan pizzas and broccolini from Ollies' in High Falls, so we all had a nice sit down meal, complete with wine. Dinner discussion seemed to linger perhaps a little too long on the depressing totalitarian spiral that the United States has entered. But Pete and Jean reported that their airplane from Australia had been "mostly full" despite widely-circulated stories about horrible things happening to even Australian tourists here in the land of the free.
