like a crazed banshee Tuesday, May 27 2025
Today at work there was a meeting where I could bask in the success of having secured VPN access in record time to a facility in Los Angeles that has proven difficult or impossible for others in the company. So, while I might not yet have had any good technical wins in this workplace, at least I at least have this requirements-gathering win. This was essentially the manifestation of a social skill, not normally considered to be one of my talents. And it's definitely not considered a talent of people who work in my profession.
At the end of the workday, I got a new (to me) $60 Chromebook working to replace a Chromebook I had been using as my bedroom/bathtub computer. It had been running Debian Linux and I never got its power management to work, so it ended up being on all the time, something that eventually wore out its fan and caused it to not work for more than a minute at a time. The new computer is fanless and is based on an Intel processor, so I have the option to install Linux when the ChromeOS stops being updated. And then, because I'd set down a CAN-bus adapter board I'd just received somewhere and immediately lost it, I finally got around to cutting all the tiny circuit boards I'd been amassing during low-tariff times (there were several dozen) out of their anti-static bags and putting them in their proper storage containers, following a system I'd set up between eight and four years ago.
When Gretchen headed off to pilates, I tried to take the dogs for a walk. But nobody wanted to come, so again I ended up down at the west extension of the Chamomile Wall adding yet more stones and even snapping some photographs. At around this time, Charlotte started barking like a crazed banshee, and she would continue doing this well into the evening. Either Gretchen or I would tell her to stop and she would for a time, but then she'd start up again. I think Brigette might've approached the house once or twice, triggering the crazed hatred Charlotte reserves for that dog, but her relative lack of exercise might've also played a roll.
Meanwhile, Gretchen had been pressure-cooking red beans in the InstantPot, and when she got back from pilates, she made a rich stew that included potatoes, kale, tomatoes, those beans, and even gnocchi, and that was what we had for dinner. Later, in the cool of the evening, I took a nice bath of mostly solar-heated water.

Charlotte and Neville were waiting for me back at the house when I returned. They hadn't gone on the walk. Click to enlarge.
