Like my brownhouse:
   being gently pinched
Wednesday, June 4 2025
Yesterday at MyTown, I'd bought some bagels (or, as a real New Yorker would refer to them as, "bagels") and avocados, but then it turned out we didn't have any Tofurky or other simulated lunch meat, so my vision for lunch today was not to be fulfilled. (I ended up eating leftover accidentally-charred tofu from a week ago with rice and broccoli.) So on the drive home this afternoon, I stopped at MyTown again to get Tofurky and a brand of corn chips I've decided are great called Ole.
Temperatures were in the high eighties, making for the first genuinely summery day I'd experienced this season. I tried to take the dogs for a walk down the Stick Trail, but they both went off on their own somewhere along the Woodshed Path within 150 feet of the house. So I just went as far as the Chamomile Wall. By moving carefully and never stooping over, I was able to add a few small stones to the western extension without experiencing much in the way of pain. I was finding that the pain, when it came, wasn't quite as intense. Sometimes there was just a feeling of being gently pinched and other times it felt like my whole lower back (including the spine, which hadn't seemed to be injured) felt a little stiff. But I was careful to avoid straying into the pain zone as best I could. I'd figured out by now that pain was almost always the result of compressing the muscles in my left lower back, while stretching them was not a problem. This meant that I could generally lean rightward without consequences, which was great to know when getting onto and off the beanbag, for example.

This evening Gretchen brought home some Filipino food from a surprisingly vegan-friendly Farm Festival in Woodstock, and that, combined with Filipino food leftovers from last week, was mostly what we had for dinner.

In the course of the day today, I learned about progressive web apps and manifest.json. ChatGPT had shown me that by including some info in the header and a manifest.json file, it was possible to get Android to treat the stripped-down button dashboard I'd created as something indistinguishable from the sort of app one installs using Google Play. I don't like apps, but for some workflows involving my ESP8266 Remote Control system, particularly those involving Gretchen, it's great to be able to specify in detail what an app will look like and do on a phone.
Of course, I soon thought of ways to improve this system. One improvement would be to generate manifest.json dynamically, which would allow me to spin up all sorts of different apps based on web pages having different configurations passed to them through query string variables. Some of those variables could be passed to a PHP script that would then generate a custom manifest.json, thereby producing apps with different appearances, behaviors, and even homescreen icons.
