garter snake on the Stick Trail Wednesday, July 23 2025
After work today, I managed to get Charlotte and Neville to both come with me on a walk down the Gullies Trail. (Neville will typically go if I start on the Woodshed Path, but he's less likely to go if I start on the Farm Road.) The Japanese stiltgrass, sedges, interrupted fern, and other herbaceous plants of the forest floor are doing great after another spring of caterpillars eating holes through the canopy. The interior forest is now enough like a field that I encountered a garter snake (not a snake of the deep woods) along the Stick Trail more than a quarter mile from the nearest forest edge.
When I got back from my hike, I gathered some kale and collard greens from the garden and got those cooking with broth in a pan while I made a box of extra-thick spaghetti and a pan of fried-up mushrooms, onions, and tempeh. The pan of kale ended up tasting kind of weird for some reason, perhaps because I added rice vinegar when I couldn't find any lemons.
