   stomach acids and Montepulciano
Sunday, November 16 2025
I awoke at 4:00am and never managed to get back to sleep, and Gretchen followed a similar trajectory. At some point this morning I resumed tinkering with my ESP8266 Remote Control code, where I'd noticed that changes to an entity having many-to-many relationships caused a loss of meta-data in the mapping tables. I figured out a bandaid for the problem so that actual edits to the relationships would trigger this unfortunate effect, not edits to the parent entity.

[REDACTED]

Yesterday Gretchen was horrified to learn that I'd never seen the 1980 classic movie Nine to Five, so she had me download it and we watched it this afternoon. I woudln't say it's a great movie, though it clearly was influential (you can see its influences in the much better Office Space). In particularly, I thought the whole set of scenes related to the stealing of a dead body from a hospital could've all been eliminated. The three actors (Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton) all did great performances, but the pacing of the movie seemed a bit ponderous for a movie trying to be so wacky.

This evening Gretchen and I met Lynn and Gregg for dinner at the Garden Café in Woodstock. When we parked in the lot at the end of Old Forge Road, we saw four or five deer resting in the field to the south. They'd apparently come here for refuge from all the hunters blasting away in the nearby forest (though none of these had antlers, so theoretically they cannot be shot for most of the season).
In the Garden after Lynn and Gregg arrived (but before the food had come out), an unexpected wave of nausea came over me. The Montepulciano wine I was drinking was tasting like poison, though it also seemed to lack alcohol, as if the bottle had been left open and it had all evaporated. After that wave passed, another worse one arrived, and this time I had to excuse myself to go outside. The cool November air felt nice, but when I'd made it to the car, I suddenly had to puke. This made an unusual sound that the deer cocked their heads at. Fortunately, as vomits go, this was a relatively painless one, expelling a mix of stomach acids, water, and Montepulciano. I sent Gretchen a message saying I was too ill to eat but could drive myself home if Lynn and Gregg would give her a ride. And then I drove home, where I recuperated fairly rapidly.
