start of winter hygge Saturday, November 22 2025
Gretchen and I had our first real session of weekend winter hygge this morning, with a nice fire in the woodstove, his and her coffee in separate french presses (decaf for Gretchen of course, though she has decided she doesn't much like the flavor of the decaf we have at present), and a big soft blanket with dogs snuggling beneath it. We'd already collaboratively gotten to queen bee while playing Spelling Bee in bed, so there was none of that.
At some point I resumed work trying to figure out where the values are in the new SolArk serial data, and after successfully tracking down the battery power bytes (which need to turn negative when the battery is charging, something that I only see when it is sunny or the generator is running), then thought I found the battery voltage bytes. But later in the day when that number should've fallen it began to increase.
As I was doing all this, I was watching YouTube clips of Fred Dibnah fearlessly scaling chimneys and knocking them down brick by brick without any safety equipment at all. It always seems like he's on the edge of plummeting to his death, but as I found out when reading about him in Wikipedia, he died of cancer in his bed (probably from being exposed to toxins accumulated on the bricks of the chimneys he knocked down; I never saw him wearing gloves). I don't know how these clips ended up in my feed, but the YouTube algorithm generally knows what I like.
Later in the day, Gretchen and I watched a couple episodes of a creepy atmospheric sci fi show called Devs about a software company set in the near future. We hadn't known anything about the show, but our neighbor A stars in it, and she'd told us that she's especially proud of her work in it.
This evening while Gretchen was watching the second Wicked movie with her friend Lisa, I was running myself a bath of mostly solar-heated water.
