pre-Thanksgiving lull Wednesday, November 26 2025
Despite the fact that her parents were visiting, Gretchen went to work as normal today, and after a little sitting around and talking with me, the parents went off to do various things on their own. They did a lot of shopping for Thanksgiving supplies out on 9W (at Adam's Fairacre Farms, the big Hannaford, and possibly Mother Fucking Earth as well) and also visited Gretchen at her workplace, the Golden Notebook in Woodstock. Meanwhile I was by myself at home, where I could have a little peace and quiet and much-needed alone time, using it mostly to gather yet more firewood and make a repair to one of the several places where a recent tree fall damaged the Chamomile Wall. I've also been beefing up the new stone wall that runs along the downhill edge of the Woodshed Path near the woodshed. That wall started out as a structure mostly of long, thin sticks of bluestone and was often no thicker than about four inches. But in places I've run little sections of wall parallel to and just downhill from it so that I can widen the wall to as thick as foot, with a nice void for wildlife inside it.
When Gretchen's parents returned from their outing, I helped her father put away everything. He'd brought back everything in paper bags, which he probably thought nothing of, but Gretchen would've been horrified and even I felt bad that I hadn't thought to give him reusable grocery bags before he'd set out.
When Gretchen got home, she procrastinated briefly but then began preparing much of the food we'd be eating during our Thanksgiving meal tomorrow. (But she said she didn't have the strength to also prepare anything for us to eat tonight, so we ended up eating leftover noodlebake and grazing on a cherry pie that Gretchen's father had bought at Adam's.
This is a photo I took of Charlotte today with my recently-revived Nikon Coolpix P510, the one I dunked in the lake back in early October. The IR filter is now missing, so I color-balanced this photo to produce something closer to natural colors. Click to enlarge.
