   janky on my desk
Friday, January 2 2026
Again I awoke at 4:00am at A's house and played Spelling Bee until I'd reached the status of queen bee. Then I watched YouTube videos until at least 6:00am before falling back to sleep. I awoke again around 8:00am, fed the cat, bundled back into my winter coat, and walked home via Dug Hill Road.

After another protacted time spent drinking coffee in front of a blazing fire in the living room, I went upstairs and resumed work on my ESP8266 cinematic universe. I had some messy debugging to do, mostly to get the slave Arduino to correctly read the configuration strings it needed to configurably parse the serial data it was receiving from an ESP8266 I'd programmed to produce a simulation of the serial stream coming out of a SolArk inverter. But since I had to keep reflashing that eight bit Arduino with various permutations of the code containing debugging instructions, I had to have an easy way to disconnect the serial data from the mock inverter. So I hooked up a nice little DPDT switch that I could throw one way when reprogramming and the other when testing. It's all pretty janky on my desk here to the left of Woodchuck's keyboard, but it was an environment I could work in.

This afternoon after Gretchen left for her the new pilates venue she's been trying in Glenford, I managed to take both dogs for a walk up the Farm Road and then back home east of the wetlands to its east. I lost Neville right away, but he returned home about twenty minutes after I did, suggesting he had gone on the whole walk in the crunchy snow.

Sensing I should make something for dinner, I cooked up a pot of rice and then made something of a stir fry with what little we had on hand: onions, tofu, and a small amount of broccoli, which I cooked in a broth after sautéing the other things first. When Gretchen got home, she added some coconut milk and Thai curry sauce to the mix. The result was kind of bland, but I've had worse at Thai restaurants.
