first tank of gas since the war
Monday, March 30 2026
It was a nice warm spring day, perfect for working on the Chamomile Wall, which I did of course do until I stepped in a puddle and my sock was soaked. (I was wearing Crocs for some reason.)
This afternoon I took the dogs for a walk down the Gullies Trail, and both came. But I didn't go all that far before coming home on the Stick Trail. And of course I was distracted along the way in both directions as I worked on every wall I passed.
The plan was to bring the dogs with me to Woodstock when I met Gretchen for a double date at the Bear Cantina with Lynn and Gregg (the couple who had been cheating on us with another couple last night). But Neville hadn't returned by the time I needed to go. I drove up the Farm Road to see if he was slowly walking home that way, but he wasn't. So I continued on to Woodstock.
This was the first time I'd driven the Forester more than a few feet since its failed inspection (and all my brake work). Distressingly, there was a rubbing sound from the front driver's side brake every time I slowed the car. That was the one brake I'd been unable to replace the friction elements of.
The gasoline light was glowing on the dashboard, so I pulled into the Stewarts at the intersection of Zena Road and Route 28 to refuel, the first time I'd refueled since the stupid ongoing war on Iran. Gasoline was just shy of $4/gallon, and a tank cost me $54.25.

After meeting Gretchen at the bookstore, she drove us to Bearsville. The weather was so nice this evening that we could've eaten outside, but the Bear Cantina had yet to set up for that season.
For some reason Gretchen saw a beer and thought it looked good, so she ordered herself a Corona Light, something she would normally never have. Food-wise, she had the vegan fajitas and the rest of us all had variations on the Impossible enchiladas, which is my go-to food there. The free chips and salsa were especially good today, so we had them get us a second basket.
Dinner conversation was mostly just us telling Lynn and Gregg about our Caribbean cruise, with them chiming in with little stories from all the vacations they'd ever gone on.

I finished reading Project Hail Mary and enjoyed the ending, which was different from what I expected, though it even managed to give some closure on all the loose threads. The narrator's voice was grating right to the end, but otherwise it was a fun read.

What my first tank of gas since the war cost me. There had been a little sticker depicting Donald Trump pointing at the price with the words "I DID THAT!" but some Trump lover peeled it off. Click to enlarge.
