poor former cheerleader Kim Saturday, May 23 2026
It was a day so relentlessly rainy that neither Gretchen nor I could get either of our dogs to go for a walk. Gretchen actually went on a walk up the Farm Road this morning, but Charlotte immediately bailed on her due to what was a fairly mild drizzle. Later Gretchen left in the Bolt of the Manhattan, where she had a play to see with her friend Kia (who votes in the Tony Awards and thus gets free tickets to attend performances; often Gretchen is her plus one).
I spent much of the day trying to get the timing and other details right when switching between, say, serial command mode and websocket command mode on my ESP8266 Remotes. Sometimes the websocket communication becomes maddeningly flaky and it takes awhile to recover, and I was also trying to make it more reliable. But when it's working well, it's amazing. I've yet to deploy on the cabin ESP8266s (something I can now do remotely) because I'm a little nervous about accidentally getting one of those devices into an uncommunicative state.
I'd taken 120mg of pseudoephedrine, and with Gretchen likely to spend the night in Manhattan (which she did), I started drinking booze at around 4:00pm. But I was good about it, breaking it up with kratom tea and food (I was eating both leftover curry I'd made and prepared curry from a packet). At some point I also took advantage of the continued cool weather to take a nice hot bath.
I've been less patient of my brother's (Don's) phone calls, finding it incredibly irritating to be yanked out of my microcontroller work to hear him hold forth on whatever quirky biological factoid he's just learned about. I find myself ignoring the calls early in the day and only taking them later when my mind isn't as occupied. He generally keeps calling throughout the day, though at least he isn't doing it every ten minutes, something he's done in the past. I'm not the only one he does this with, mind you. There was a cute cheerleader on our bus named Kim back when we were in high school who answers his calls sometimes. And, since she does, she's a regular in his outgoing call rotation. He says he's given her my phone number but of course she has no reason to actually call me (at least so long as she hasn't found Don as a runover corpse on Mill Creek Lane).
