facets of a wood frog Monday, July 20 2026
location: rural Hurley Township, Ulster County, NY, USA
It was a sunny day but cool for this time of year. With the sky so clear and the humidity so low, light had an unusual crispness.
Our house was depleted of many staples, so early this afternoon I loaded up the dogs in the Subaru Forester and drove to the Uptown Hannaford (the "Ghettoford") to buy things like beans, various non-dairy milks, bread, pasta, pasta sauce, tempeh, tofu, and few fun items like avocados and bagels (which came pre-bagged in plastic, for better or worse).
Back at the house, I took the dogs (both came!) for a relatively short walk down the Gulleys Trail and back on the Stick Trail. There had been some tree falls in the past two weeks while I was in Europe, so I will need to be bringing a chainsaw back through there. The only wildlife of note was a wood frog, whose angular body covered with leaf-colored facets was almost impossible to see even when I knew where to look.
Late this afternoon, I gathered a lot of kale and collard greens from the garden and cooked them in broth while also boiling up a pot of spaghetti to be eaten with sauteed (and somewhat blackened) tempeh and onions. Gretchen was in a meeting on her phone when she came home, but she was soon available for dinner. We watched both Jeopardy! and the final episode of the first season of Dark Winds, though I was finding it a bit too formulaic for my tastes. Also, our big screen teevee was making it look a bit too much like a cheesy soap opera.
