my brother does not eat lettuce Monday, July 27 2026
location: rural Hurley Township, Ulster County, NY
My brother Don called me today from his trailer for the first time since Gretchen and I returned from our recent cruise. When I asked how he was, he told me in great detail about the diarrhea he's been suffering from. He still suffers from it, but the pain in his asshole is diminished. I reminded him that he has MedicAid and he should use it if he needs to see a doctor. I also asked him if he'd eaten any iceberg lettuce, as there is an ongoing cyclospora outbreak nationwide from contaminated iceberg lettuce. But Don said that he never eats lettuce.
This afternoon I took Charlotte on a walk down the Gullies Trail and then went off-trail westward, crossing the Stick Trail, climbing an escarpment, and coming back home via the Chamomile Headwaters Trail. I took that route so I could look for more chanterelles along the CHT, but I didn't find any.
Gretchen originally planned to be going out to dinner with a friend named Noah whose organization she likes to donate money to. But Noah canceled and that meant I had to make dinner. So I made a big pot of soup based on kale and other leafy brassicas from the garden, potatoes, carrots, a few fresh tomatoes from the garden, onions, canned kidney beans, canned crushed tomatoes, and campanelle pasta. Gretchen ended up liking the soup enough to get seconds even though I'd forgotten to add the lemon juice I'd squeezed. So I added it the rest. We watched Jeopardy! and the first episode of the second season of Dark Winds. I still find the show too much of a crime drama, but the first episode of the seaon was more watchable than average.
The mysterious pain in Gretchen's right leg continues to move around and worsen, and now she's complaining about it almost all the time that she's not in a meeting related to the march she is organizing against animal testing.
