   August 2026

hillbilly refrigerator - I find a way to store cold beer at the dock.
improvements to an island for a loon - Filling a gap between boulders after having the wind push me to a rocky island on an innertube.
big dead pine - It falls without breaking anything of note just east of the house.
neighbor and a niece - Two visitors, including one armed with a bow and three arrows.
big block of red oak - I begin work on a stool made from a tree that fell across the Chamomile Gorge Trail.
island loonification - Filling in the last gap between the lakeshore and the interior of a small island that might be suitable for a nesting pair of loons.
the Sisyphean Stone - I have a name for a landmark in the Great Hemlock Grove.
relationship with a white VW - Sometimes when a car travels a long distance with you, you feel a connection to it.
transporting a spiral staircase - I drive about 500 miles to retrieve it form north of Boston.
early morning drive to the Catskills - I needed to be home early to make sure some dog-related things went smoothly.
what does Neville want? - He whines when he wants something, but the whines all sound the same.
Neville adapts to his situation - He's less needy than he was.
shale from the side of US-209 - For the first time since moving to the Hudson Valley, I take advantage of a free source of fill material.
Neville escapes containment - Left alone in his corral when I'm walking Charlotte and Gretchen's parents and Gretchen are off in Stone Ridge, Neville finds a way to bust out.
rot in the heart of a four by four - Deck posts are the most likely items of treated lumber to be rotten after 30 years.
second chanterelle season - Feeding them to my inlaws in BLTs while being so sure I won't kill them that a week or so ago I'd trolled NextDoor about feeding poisonous mushrooms to my inlaws.
maybe the chanterelle season moved - I find abundant chanterelles in my favorite patch along the Chamomile Headwater Trail, though they hadn't been there during what is normally the height of the season.
another thing to watch out for when buying deck screws - Now you have to make sure you're not buying a mix of different sizes.
uses for well-weathered treated lumber - What hasn't actually rotted away is in usable condition.
moving a very large flat rock with a crowbar - It helped that it needed to go down a slope.
Ramona Rock Swamp - I have a name for the wetland at the bottom of the cliffs north of the cabin.
working around yellow jackets - It turns out it's possible to do do construction close to their nests if you give them a chance to acclimate.
freaking downpour followed by a clear blue sky - I get caught in a rain storm a half mile from shelter.
wind generator from China - Also: watching Neville through a video feed.
ugly welds and successful solder blobs - Doing manly shop tasks with moderate competency.
how Gretchen handles bigots - She figured out how to get a bigot's boss to yell at a bigoted employee.
Rochester day trip - A scenic route through Utica to do some landlording.
insomnia at the lake - After Gretchen and the dogs join me at the cabin, I have trouble falling asleep.
diamond from an Adirondack hitchhiker - While sipping on a soon-to-spill road beer, I pick up a rough-looking 45 year old woman who needs a ride to Johnstown.
semi-euphoric flow state - Kratom tea has me working hard and not wanting time to advance.
the driver of the mystery pickup - I happen to be in the driveway when an estranged friend drives past.
