   wind generator from China
Monday, August 24 2026

location: rural Town of Hurley, Ulster County, NY

I've been using a new insect repellant, Stem "For Your Skin" when I take Charlotte on her morning walks (this time down the Gulleys Trail), and the great thing about it is that it has no fragrance. But then I'll absentmindedly nibble on my arm hair and taste something bitter and unpleasant. (That was one of the motivations for taking a bath later this evening after Gretchen and I had eaten spaghetti while watching Shark Tank.)
For most of the day, I was able to keep tabs on Neville either by putting him nearby in the laboratory bean bag or by watching him on the video feed coming from the Raspberry Pi Zero attached to the front of the woodshed (it's been there since 2019 and still works fine, so long as the GFI circuit powering it has not been tripped). That allows him to lie in the sun without me having to be out there with him being attacked by mosquitoes.
At some point while he was out there, a UPS truck showed up to deliver a large box. Our driver these days seems like something of a stoner, and he often says "good morning" no matter what time of day it is. He wasn't frightened of the dogs at all, and soon he had converted Neville from a suspicious barker to a smiling tail-wagger. When I saw the box was for me, I realized it was a wind generator I'd bought over a month ago that had been on a slow boat from China. It had cost something like $600, which is far outside what I will usually pay for something from China bought on eBay. But I didn't have to pay import duties, unlike all the wind generators with origins in Bulgaria. (The Trump tariff regime is chaotic and irrational and seems to be steering people mostly to buy stuff from China these days.)
After I unboxed it, the generator seemed solid, even if it was covered with lots of stray bits of styrofoam adhering to it via static charge. I'd somehow made a mistake when ordering it and gotten the 12v instead of the 48v model, but I think I can make it work.
