   open communication
Tuesday, November 17 1998
I rode my bicycle all the way to work this morning. There was no singular straight forward path to follow; at one point I actually had to put the bike up on my shoulder and carry it down a rocky slope to get to Friars Road.
A meeting was organized at work so that those of us who had responded negatively to the company retreat and Human Development could let the Grand Pooh Bah know what's on our minds. This firm practices a policy of "open communication" and people are encouraged to express their negative thoughts without fear of reprisal. In that spirit, all dozen of us pretty much let the Grand Pooh Bah have it. I quickly entered into my super-angry state as I said what I found so disagreeable with the not-so-subtle pressure to participate in Human Development. It ended up being a fairly good meeting. The bad energy was dispelled and the Grand Pooh Bah said once and for all that HD is not mandatory. So that's settled. He and I even had a pleasant conversation in the evening about ASP programming, including the subject of my worker-replacing robots.
I made the whole journey home on my bicycle. At a traffic light I stopped next to a lad holding a sign on the corner. He'd wave it a little at passing motorists, encouraging them to go to a nearby jewelry store. I asked if he liked his job and he said it was "boring as hell." I replied that I was just getting off work as a "computer programmer." "That pays good money, doesn't it?" he asked.
By the time I made it home, I was exhausted. I took a bath and had a low-energy evening with Kim. I'd lost most of the high I had yesterday.
