Thursday, January 22, 1976 - Sunday, January 25, 1976

Quite cold and frozen. Noted (on 23) that hearwood of black walnut is far more resistant to insect attack and decay ( particularly the latter) than the sapwood so that old logs with the sapwood almost entirely gone are still usable and in fact very sound and attractive with their beautiful grain. I have been making simple "artifacts" from this walnut, fish cleaning boards, stools etc. Today also the afternoon was bright and sunny with T= 43 deg, F and more in the sun. We are as usual enjoying ourselves and nature here.
