   matzah and working remote
Monday, April 25 2016

location: rural Hurley Township, Ulster County, New York

I slept late and only had only been out of bed about an hour before my first remote workday on the new job began. Unlike every other remtoe job I've had, this one expected me to work a set workday on California time, that is, from noon until 8:30pm my time (with a half hour off for lunch) every workday. Even so, there wasn't much interaction between me and my colleagues throughout the day. There was a half-hour video conference at 2pm Eastern Time and a few emails, but most of my interaction happened through a proprietary task manager built by Jo (whom I am going to start referring to as Meerkat, since that is the animal he most resembles).
It's also Passover week, and that means matzah, lots of matzah. Gretchen and I prepared ourselves many matzah pizzas with various toppings (included roasted cauliflower), gradually making a mess of the kitchen island.
It was cool enough this evening to make a fire, and yet again I managed to fill the house with smoke, suggesting that the chimney really is badly blocked, probably at the top. I was thinking of climbing up on the roof and dealing with it, but Gretchen made the executive decision to call a professional, saying getting a proper chimney sweep to look at our chimney once every thirteen and a half years is not excessive.

My workday now ends so late that it has thrown a bit of a monkey wrench into the usual routine of the household. Normally Gretchen and I would eat and watch Jeopard a little after 7:00pm, but tonight I was working at that time, so Gretchen did those things alone.
