Notre Dame Cathedral gargoyles. When I first arrived in Paris, I couldn't stop taking pictures of gargoyles. But it was night, and none of them turned out. Later I learned that gargoyles were everywhere, in all sorts of forms and states of decay. Like snowflakes, no two of them are alike.
There's something appealing about the Gothic sentiment: putting sinister little monsters on the roofs of holy buildings. Can you imagine an American religious movement showing such a sensibility?
I wonder whom the guy with the hat was modeled upon.
