I hadn't really thought about it before coming to Iceland, but there's not much that can be done with land that has been covered with rough-surfaced lava. Most of the Reykjanes peninsula, the most populous part of Iceland, has been rendered wasteland by lava. The only plant that grows on it is reindeer moss.
