all sorts of marketable skills Saturday, August 25 2001
Most of the day was spent getting things to work on my Linux box. Though I know almost nothing about Linux software installation, I kept consulting web pages and help screens until I'd set up an Apache web server, MySQL, PHP, and a telnet server. By the end of the day the only important thing it lacked was a functional FTP dæmon. I don't know why this stuff wasn't installed by the Mandrake installation CD when I asked it to install everything, but the experience of having to do this stuff myself is teaching me all sorts of marketable skills. Remember, folks, I believe that one day open source Unix will be the universal operating system standard. Microsoft will continue to starve Windows with a series of poorly-considered monopolistic and anti-piracy decisions while open source hackers who actually love what they make continue to improve the Linux experience.
In other news, my new Astoria bank account was billed a $30 overdraft fee, evidently because the charge for the checks I'd requested was made to an account that had yet to be credited with my initial deposit of $3000. How stupid is that?
