[REDACTED]

Gretchen had a cold this morning, and I was following close behind. I started sneezing in the late morning and soon thereafter my sinuses began to drain. Since I was the healthier of the two of us, I was the one who went out for Desperately Seeking C and vegetable soup. We didn't immediately freak out and demand Cipro from our doctor, because we're a little smarter than that (and we don't have a doctor). Gretchen tells me that one of her friends has a co-worker, a computer technician, who expressed honest fears that she had "Amtracks." Unprecedented realities provide unprecedented opportunities for the expression of stupidity.

Today, after dropping off some paid bills in a mailbox on 7th Avenue in Park Slope, I was walking with Sally past a construction site on Union Street and I had a great idea for a name for a band, "POST NO BILLS."

It would be safe to say that all hell is breaking loose in this country. Are there any more ways remaining for things to go wrong? Though, even as I type, the American police state is being built to unprecedented heights of fascism, I can't help but believe that the massive level of focus being placed upon the anthrax crisis is leaving vast swaths of our society unsupervised. The fact that anthrax and Afghanistan are the only stories in the news means that all sorts of people are getting away with murder, corporate crime, and worse, all completely unscrutinized. By way of example, Matt Rogers sent me a link about how industries are getting away with horrendous environmental crimes. He also sent me a link about how the paranoid mentality sweeping the land has gone beyond absurdity. But the government, the entity we trust to right these wrongs, has few leads on the September 11th terrorism and fewer still about the anthrax snailmail "attachments." In this climate, what was once unthinkable is now being debated openly. Osama bin Laden may bring down Western culture yet.
