There aren't many things keeping me here in Los Angeles. Not my job, not my love life, not my social life, not my artistic career. What keeps me here is my house and the fact that John needs a place to live. I know it's not normal for a landlord to be so concerned with the welfare of his tenant, but I'm weird like that.
This evening, though, as I was hanging out with John and Chun, John had a life-altering phone conversation with his brother in law in New York. By way of background, it's important to note that John's brother in law is one of the very few people in America who played the internet bubble just right, getting in on the ground floor, building a company, selling the company, and being laid off by the acquiring conglomerate a few short months before the fateful events of April 2000. Evidently John's brother in law is starting a new venture and he wants John to work for him.
By now I know John pretty well and I wasn't surprised at all when he immediately agreed to move to New York to work on this new venture. He was willing to change the trajectory of his life at a moment's notice and drop everything: a teaching job in Santa Monica, his few Los Angeles friendships (okay, so he wasn't really dropping all that much) to pull up stakes and move to New York.
What did this mean for me? It meant that I would either need to find another housemate or move to New York myself. Since the latter option seemed eminently more appealing, I immediately listed my condo for rent in Westside Rentals. I set the monthly rent at a ludicrously-high $2700.
