Summer begins, 2016

It was a hot summery day (indeed, it was the longest day of the year, and thus the beginning of summer), though of course I spent much of it in the laboratory working, usually with a fan blowing on me. It's possible to get some things done even while watching an episode of Game of Thrones, though I suspect Gretchen overheard the extended battle scene of last night's episode and assumed I was goofing off.

This evening I continued work on the relocation of hosting for that set of side-client sites that I'd begun this weekend. This was complicated by the nature of the code, which rests on a proprietary (and evidently undocumented) PHP framework originally written in Russian. (I came up with nothing when I searched for elements of it in Google.) Given the nature of the sites it was being used for, it seemed unnecessarily complicated, with classes and interfaces and a devious caching system which was trying to load about 20 important files using the absolute addresses where they'd been in the old hosting environment. Tracking down where those paths were stored (it wasn't in a PHP file) took me a couple hours of detective work, and there was a time initially when it appeared that maybe the files I was looking for had actually been in a part of the old webtree that I hadn't had access to. But eventually (and with great satisfaction) I got the site running in its new home atop that dumpster fire of a PHP framework.
