   protecting styrofoam
Monday, April 27 2009

At the greenhouse today I used quarter inch Wonderboard to cover the styrofoam just below the glazing on the south foundation wall. Styrofoam, being made of polystyrene, is a plastic particular susceptible to damage from ultraviolet light and it must eventually be covered or else it will be destroyed on a molecular level and crumble into some sort of carbon-rich dust. A quarter inch of mesh-reinforced concrete seems ideal for protecting styrofoam from sun and minor mechanical wear, assuming it isn't likely to be impacted by sharp, hard objects.
