stickies that could float Monday, October 10 2016
Initially it was difficult to focus on work, what with all the reporting on last night's debate. Trump's performance hadn't apparently aged well in people's memories, and by now it was being widely panned. And his decision to have a "press conference" (with no questions from the press) immediately before the debate was being widely derided. I watched it myself, and I'm forced to characterize it in the Trumpiest way there is: Sad!
I spent the entire workday refining my new free-form SQL tool in anticipation of the SQL class I'd be teaching tomorrow. Among the features it still needed was a way to lock down certain reports so they could only be run from certain domains (so certain expensive or unknown queries aren't run against huge databases), and a better way to display a list of logged queries for some tools.
You see, one of the best features of my raw SQL tool is a log that it keeps, which makes it easy to switch back and forth between queries or modify them slightly from one to the next without having to keep notes of what one is doing in an open text file. In phpMyAdmin, by contrast, it's easy to completely lose an important query if one doesn't take measures to copy and paste it somewhere. The existing reporting system (to which I was adding a raw SQL tool) already had a log (thanks to work I'd done this summer in the Adirondacks), but I wanted it to be stripped down, in a tiny font, with stickies that could float to the top if given names.
