   accidental 200 mg of diphenhydramine
Wednesday, March 8 2023
Gretchen has had a lot of problems with a pain that started in her back some months ago and then spread into an arm. For a time, the pain then stayed in the arm, but then recently it moved back into her back. Last night it was giving her so much trouble that she took what she thought were four ibuprofen gel caps. But it turned out that the gel caps were diphenhydramine (aka Benadryl), and the does was a very high 200 mg. I routinely take 150 mg of diphenhydramine, but I weigh 30% more than Gretchen does and the goal is always to knock myself out for the night. But I always take it early so it will have time to wear off when I need to do things the next day. Unfortunately, diphenhydramine doesn't work very well on Gretchen even in high doses. It makes her miserable and sleepy but somehow also prevents her from falling asleep. So she ended up tossing and turning in misery all night, sleeping fitfully at best. She told me this news first thing this morning, and I wondered if I was going to have to drive her to the Newark airport (two hours away) for her evening flight to Seattle. But then she managed to fall asleep and the diphenhydramine wore off and by the time she needed to leave she was good to go.
Meanwhile I'd taken a 150 mg dose of pseudoephedrine, and this contributed to a fairly productive workday, though I did start drinking beer and booze before the workday was done. The first time I'd had an overnight of alone-time in months.
